Students in this class will only read the first episode of Joyce’s masterpiece Ulysses (1922), widely considered the greatest novel of the twentieth century. Why just the first episode? It introduces in a very accessible and direct manner the many layers of myth, symbol, allusion, irony, and verbal play and parody that define Joyce’s stunning stream-of -consciousness novel. It is also great fun, highly accessible, and largely free of the formidable mythic weight that surrounds the later episodes.
