Write Your Family Stories

Family stories help us understand who we are, where we’ve come from, and where we’re going. Strengthening family bonds across generations, they remind us that we will be remembered. Anyone can capture their family stories, and in this class you'll build your family legacy one story at a time. Each week, you'll learn a new story-based project that helps you tell a particular type of family story. Projects include family sayings, life's pivotal moments, character sketches, lessons learned, and more. You'll have plenty of writing time in class to practice these new techniques. All levels of writers welcome! Students should bring a notebook and pen or computer.

3 sessions: 10:00-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, 15, 22.

Celtic Knot

Celtic and Norse Knotwork for Beginners

This class will explore the historical origins of Celtic and Norse knot patterns, starting in the Neolithic era with maze and labyrinth stone carvings and moving on to later examples of interlacing and zoomorphic knotwork used to adorn cultural objects over millennia. Symbolism and language embodied in knot and spiral patterns will also be discussed. Participants will learn several ways to draw interlacing knots based on a grid pattern, as well as basic construction of Triskelle spirals and an introduction to zoomorphic (animal) elements in knotwork.

Note: Students should try to have graph paper, a straight edge ruler and preferred drawing materials (pencils, pens, colored pencils, markers, etc.) If available, a compass/protractor and circle template/french curve tools would also be very useful to have. A PDF workbook will be available at the first class.
