Book Discussion: “Constance Markievicz: Irish Revolutionary”

April 13, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm

Book Discussion Constance Markievicz

Join Dr. Kevin Byrne and Dr. Steven Griffith for a free, two-night discussion of Anne Haverty’s, Constance Markievicz: Irish Revolutionary (2016)

Constance Gore-Booth was born into the privileged world of a wealthy Protestant landowning family in County Sligo, Ireland in 1868. Artist, author, actress, and poet, she married Casimir Dunin Markievicz, a Polish count, in 1900. Countess Constance Markievicz became an important voice in the Irish Republican movement, was second in command in St. Stephen’s Green during the Easter Rising, was the first woman elected to the British Parliament, took the anti-Treaty side during the Irish Civil War, and was the first woman to hold a government cabinet position. She died in poverty in 1927, both beloved and reviled. Haverty’s biography is considered a foundational work in the study of this amazing, but sometimes sidelined, Irish patriot.
