Patrick Kavanagh, his life and poetry

Considered the greatest Irish poet in the decades between W.B. Yeats (1865-1939) and Seamus Heaney (1939-2013), the great Monaghan-born Patrick Kavanagh (1904-67) came from a modest rural background and left formal schooling at the age of 13 to ‘dabble in verse.’ Held in the warmest affection precisely because of his unsentimental and caustic views of the realities of Irish deprivation, he achieved a kind of compassionate down-to-earth vision that found the extraordinary in the ordinary. Course text: Collected Poems by Patrick Kavanagh. Penguin Modern Classics.
