Joe Dowling’s “The Tempest”
Shakespeare, the Guthrie Theatre, and Irish contexts
Dubliner Joe Dowling re-invented the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis in a new three-stage structure in a new location overlooking St. Anthony Falls in 2006. He returns to direct Shakespeare’s great meditation on magic, love, betrayal and revenge The Tempest in March 2022. This class will read Shakespeare’s play, discuss the Irish backgrounds of Dowling, and will discuss the production. Students should plan on attending the production of The Tempest on their own time at the Guthrie Theatre. (Class fee does not include tickets to the play. You may purchase tickets from the Guthrie Theatre.)
Any paperback edition of Shakespeare’s The Tempest will suffice for the course text. The instructor recommends the Folger Shakespeare Library paperback.
4 sessions. Saturdays, 4:00 – 5:15 pm. February 19 – March 12, 2022.
