“Finnegans Wake” by James Joyce

James Joyce’s final masterpiece: Finnegans Wake.

Seventeen years in the making, Joyce’s final masterwork from 1939 is an astonishing whirligig of the world’s languages and mythologies presented in a polyglot dream language. By turns hilarious and outrageously inventive, it is a phantasmagoria of dazzling linguistic fireworks popping with irreverent comic energy. This class will discuss and critically examine its first chapter. No previous experience with any of Joyce’s work is necessary.

Course texts: A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake by Joseph Campbell and Henry Morton Robinson; and, Finnegans Wake by James Joyce.
