Aspects of emigration in Irish art

Let’s explore together what we can learn by looking at Irish art that covers themes of migration and diaspora. We’ll cover topics including drawings and paintings of the famine era, and twentieth-century works by some of Ireland’s most notable painters and sculptors. We’ll explore a number of monuments to the Famine and memorializing emigrants in Ireland and around the world. We’ll take a look at an intriguing group of London Irish painters who portray the often difficult lives of the Irish in Britain, and at some of the photography that was created in the post-Boom era of the 21st Century. As we discover the works, we’ll explore what the pieces have to teach us about the times from which they were produced, the experiences that migrants endured, and how they might reflect upon the experiences of our communities, our families, or ourselves.
