Doherty Family Seminar with Brian Miller

April 25, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Doherty Family

In this free webinar, librarian Brian Miller expounds on the story behind a 1958 home recording made in St. Paul, Minnesota of fiddle player Tony Doherty and his musical daughters. Miller traces the family to rural Scott County, Minnesota where Tony and his wife Margaret grew up in a tight knit community of Irish Americans where dances and fiddle tunes (with piano accompaniment) flourished. The recording, made at the Doherty home on Selby Avenue, features Tony (1896–1972) on fiddle, daughter Marge on piano and accordion, daughter Mary on piano and daughter Joan on piano as well as singing by daughter Monica. The music is richly supplemented by a family memoir of over 400 pages written by Margaret (1894-1981).
