Éire – Athbheochan/Revival 1893-2018

November 17, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

This exhibition was generously loaned to us by the Consulate General of Ireland in Chicago. The Eoin McKiernan Library is proud to be the host of this remarkable display.

Conradh na Gaeilge (The Gaelic League) is an organization whose main objective is to encourage the daily use of the Irish language, An Ghaeilge, on the island of Ireland and among the Irish diaspora.

In 2018 the Gaelic League/Conradh na Gaeilge marked 125 years of Irish language revival with a yearlong celebration titled Bliain na Gaeilge 2018. The bilingual traveling exhibition “Éire: Athbheochan/Revival 1893-2018,” created for this occasion, documents aspects of language revival during this 125-year period including teaching, culture, community participation, Gaeltachts, industry and American influence/support.

Schedule

  • Vice Counsel Sarah Keating will join us with an introduction to the evening.
  • This bilingual exhibition will be presented by Connemara native Lavinia Finnerty.
  • Eoin McKiernan Library relative resources introduced by Natalie O’Shea.
  • Thereafter we will hear from two subject matter experts, Fintan Moore and Nancy Stenson.

Then we will happily answer questions in Irish or English and the audience is encouraged to participate in an open discussion.

Free to the public. Scroll to the bottom to RSVP and receive a Zoom link on November 17.
